How to Prepare a Refrigerator or Freezer. for Storage (Singapore & KL Guide)

Defrost, clean and dry your fridge or freezer before storage — and why it must rest before switching back on. A simple prep guide for Singapore & KL.

Written by Jason

Putting a fridge or freezer into storage is simple — but a little preparation makes the difference between an appliance that comes back fresh and ready to use, and one that returns with a musty smell or trapped moisture. In Singapore and Kuala Lumpur's humidity, that prep matters even more.

This guide walks you through exactly what to do before your collection day, why each step matters, and how the appliance should be handled when it comes back to you. BEAM Space does the heavy lifting and the careful transport — your part takes about a day, most of which is just letting the unit defrost on its own.

The short version

If you only remember five things:

  1. Empty it and remove all food and drinks.

  2. Switch it off and let it defrost fully — usually 8 to 24 hours.

  3. Clean the inside and outside, then dry it completely. No moisture left anywhere.

  4. Secure or remove loose shelves, drawers and trays so nothing rattles or cracks.

  5. After it returns, let it stand upright for at least 4 hours before switching it back on.

That's the whole job. Everything below is the detail behind those steps.

When to start preparing

Start the day before your scheduled collection. The only step that takes real time is defrosting, and you don't want to be racing the clock on the morning our team arrives.

  • Freezers and fridge-freezers: allow up to 24 hours to defrost completely, especially if there's heavy ice build-up.

  • Fridges with light frost only: 8 to 12 hours is usually enough.

Switch the unit off and unplug it the evening before, and you'll have a clean, dry, ready-to-go appliance by collection time.

Step-by-step: preparing your appliance

1. Empty everything out

Remove all food, drinks, ice and any items from the door shelves. Storage units are not for perishables, and even sealed items can leak, spoil or attract pests over weeks in storage.

2. Switch off and defrost

Unplug the appliance and prop the door open so the freezer can thaw. Place towels or a shallow tray at the base to catch melting water — older units in particular can release a surprising amount.

Never chip or scrape ice off with a knife, screwdriver or other sharp tool. You can puncture the cooling lining and permanently damage the unit. Let it melt naturally. To speed things up, you can place a bowl of warm water inside and close the door for a few minutes at a time.

3. Clean inside and out

Wipe down every interior surface, including shelves, drawers and door seals. The proven, manufacturer-safe cleaner is simple: one tablespoon of baking soda dissolved in warm water. It lifts grime and neutralises odours without leaving a chemical smell. Avoid bleach and harsh solvents, which can damage seals and linger.

Don't forget the outside, the door gasket, and the drip tray underneath — these are the spots most likely to grow mould if left dirty.

4. Dry it completely — this is the most important step

This is where most storage problems begin. A fridge is essentially an airtight, insulated box. Any moisture sealed inside has nowhere to go, and in our climate that means mould, mildew and a sour smell within weeks.

Towel-dry every surface, then leave the doors open to air-dry for a few hours before collection. Pay special attention to the rubber door seals and the corners of drawers, where water pools. When in doubt, dry it again.

5. Secure or remove loose parts

Glass shelves, crisper drawers and ice trays can shift and crack during transport. Either remove them and pack them separately (wrap glass shelves in a towel or bubble wrap), or tape them securely in place. Loose racks rattling around are the most common cause of avoidable damage.

6. Handle the water and ice lines

If your fridge has a built-in water dispenser or ice maker, turn off and disconnect the water supply, then drain the line and empty the ice maker fully. Leftover water in these lines is a hidden source of leaks and mould.

7. Tidy the power cord

Coil the power cord and tape it to the back of the unit so it doesn't drag or get caught during the move.

Keeping the door ajar in storage

Once a fridge is clean and dry, it should be stored with the door slightly open so air can circulate. A sealed-shut fridge, even a clean one, will eventually develop a stale smell.

You don't need to manage this yourself — BEAM Space stores fridges and freezers with the doors held slightly ajar as standard, exactly the way the manufacturers recommend. If you'd like extra odour protection, you're welcome to leave an open box of baking soda or some activated charcoal inside before collection.

The "resting" period: why a fridge can't be switched on straight away

This is the step people most often get wrong, so it's worth understanding.

Inside every fridge and freezer, the compressor holds lubricating oil. When an appliance is moved — and especially if it's ever tilted or laid down — that oil can shift into the cooling lines. If you power the unit on before the oil has drained back, it can starve the compressor and cause permanent damage.

The rule of thumb:

  • A fridge should always be transported upright whenever possible. Our team does this as standard.

  • After redelivery, let the unit stand upright and undisturbed for at least 4 hours before switching it on.

  • If it was tilted or laid on its side at any point during the move, wait a full 24 hours to be safe.

  • Once you switch it on, let it run empty until it reaches its normal temperature — usually a few hours — before restocking it with food.

This short wait costs you nothing and protects an expensive appliance. It's the single best habit to build around moving any cooling unit.

A note on Singapore and KL humidity

In drier climates you can sometimes get away with a quick wipe-down. Here, you can't. Singapore and Kuala Lumpur sit at 70–90% humidity for much of the year, which means any trapped moisture in a sealed appliance turns into mould far faster than it would elsewhere.

The takeaway is simple: drying is non-negotiable. If you do nothing else thoroughly, dry the inside completely and let it air out before collection. It's the one step that prevents the vast majority of "my fridge came back smelling musty" problems.

What BEAM Space handles for you

Your job is the prep — defrost, clean, dry. Everything after that is ours:

  • Careful collection from your home or office, by our own trained team.

  • Upright, secured transport so the compressor and internal parts are protected.

  • Proper storage with doors held ajar in our managed facility.

  • Redelivery on request, brought back to wherever you need it.

You never lift, drive or wrestle an appliance down a stairwell. You prepare it, we take it from there.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a fridge rest before being plugged in after storage? Let it stand upright for at least 4 hours after redelivery before switching it on. If it was ever tilted or laid down during transport, wait a full 24 hours.

Do I need to defrost my freezer before storage? Yes. Any ice left inside will melt during transport and storage, leaving water that causes mould and odour. Allow up to 24 hours for a full defrost.

Can I store a refrigerator with food inside? No. Remove all food and drinks. Perishables spoil, sealed items can leak, and both attract pests over time.

Will my fridge get mouldy in storage? Only if it goes in damp. A fridge that is cleaned, dried completely and stored with the door slightly ajar will come back fresh. Moisture is the single cause of mould — eliminate it and the problem disappears.

How long does it take to defrost a freezer? Usually 8 to 24 hours depending on the amount of ice. Start the evening before your collection day so it's fully thawed and dry in time.

Can a refrigerator be transported lying down? It's best avoided. Upright transport protects the compressor. If a unit must be tilted to fit through a doorway or lift, that's fine — just extend the resting time to 24 hours before switching it on. BEAM Space transports appliances upright wherever possible.

What's the safest way to clean the inside? A tablespoon of baking soda in warm water. It cleans and deodorises without harsh chemicals that can damage seals or leave a smell.
