Storage Plan Selection & Automatic Upgrades

At BEAM Space, we want your storage plan to match what you’re actually storing—without surprises or back-and-forth. Here’s how plan selection works and how automatic upgrades are handled when item volume exceeds a plan’s capacity.

If you haven’t discussed a plan with Customer Service

If you are a new customer and have not spoken with Customer Service about selecting a storage plan, you will be placed on our Per Item Storage plan by default.

This ensures we can receive, store, and inventory your items correctly even if no plan has been confirmed yet.

If you don’t want Per Item Storage

No problem—if you don’t want Per Item Storage and you haven’t spoken to Customer Service, you can request a different plan when you create your pick-up.

What to do

When booking your first pick-up, simply add a note indicating the plan you want to switch to (for example: “Please put me on the 30 sq ft plan”).

Our team will review your request and apply the plan based on your stored volume.

Automatic upgrades if your items don’t fit the plan requested

Even if you request a specific plan, your actual stored volume may be higher than expected once items are assessed and stacked efficiently and safely.

If the total volume of your items exceeds the capacity of the plan you requested, we will automatically upgrade you to the next largest plan that can accommodate your items.

This prevents unsafe stacking, overcrowding, or damage risk from forcing items into a space that’s too small.

Example:

  • You select a 30 sq ft plan

  • We determine your items require 40 sq ft of space when stacked efficiently and safely

  • You will be upgraded to the next largest plan, which is 50 sq ft

Why we upgrade automatically

We do this to ensure:

  • Items are stored safely (no unstable or unsafe stacking

  • Items remain accessible and properly inventoried

  • Your storage is sized accurately to what you’re actually storing

Quick FAQ

Can I avoid being placed on Per Item Storage?

Yes—either confirm a plan with Customer Service, or leave a note during pick-up booking requesting your preferred plan.

What if I choose a plan that’s too small by mistake?

We’ll upgrade you automatically to the next plan that fits your total volume.

Will you downgrade me if I store less later?

If your stored volume decreases, you can contact Customer Service to review your plan options.

How we estimate the storage volume for your items

To make sure your items are stored safely and efficiently, we estimate the storage space required based on the actual items collected.

What we consider

When we assess volume, we take into account:

  • Item dimensions (length × width × height) for larger items (e.g., suitcases, shelves, chairs)

  • Number and size of boxes/bags (standard cartons, oversized boxes, loose bags, etc.)

  • Stackability - Some items stack well (e.g., cartons), while others should not be stacked or can only be stacked safely to a certain height (e.g., fragile items, electronics, oddly shaped items)

  • Fragility and protection needs - Items that need extra care may require more space to avoid pressure, bending, or damage

  • Safe stacking and stability - We avoid unsafe “Tetris stacking” that could cause items to fall, warp, or get crushed

  • Access and organization - We store items in a way that supports inventory accuracy and retrieval (not buried or packed dangerously tight)

How the estimate is applied

We calculate how much space your items require when stacked efficiently and safely, using the same approach we apply across all customers.

If the total volume exceeds the capacity of the plan you requested, we will upgrade you to the next largest plan that can accommodate your items.

Important note

Customer-provided estimates (or selections made during booking) are helpful, but the final storage space required is determined based on the items actually collected and safe storage best practices.
